Known as the mother of the freedom movement, Rosa Parks is most recognized for her unwavering courage after refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., bus in 1955. Her quiet act spurred the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a significant event in the Civil Rights Movement. Parks received many accolades during her lifetime, including the NAACP’s highest award, the Spingarn Medal, and her legacy lives on as the “First Lady of Civil Rights.”
